Keyword research is on the minds of every Internet Marketer out there, and it should be on yours too. Of course, maybe it isn’t. Maybe you think that it is too hard to understand, or perhaps that it takes too much time. And really, since your writing includes all kinds of words that are relevant to your blog, you might think that it will just work out anyway.
If that is what you are thinking, you might be right. At least, if your niche is narrow enough and is not very competitive, you may never need to worry about keywords as they will naturally work their way into the search engine’s awareness. Then again, why take that chance?
Using keywords in your posts
Keywords should always be in the title of your post. There really should never be any exceptions to this. It seems to be a fairly popular point of view amongst SEOs today that it is easy to take over the search engine spot of a webpage that does not use the keyword in its title. Of course, it is likely a bit more complicated than that, but adding your keywords to your titles is easy enough.
Also, when you are linking to another page, whether that page be in your website or not, you should be using a good keyword. That is also generally agreed upon by many professional SEOs. But, it does not seem likely that using the same exact anchor text over and over again to link to your site from elsewhere is really going to look natural to search engines. Even if this does not happen due to some nefarious activity, you may be penalized.
A better option is to have your links vary a bit by use of keyword synonyms.
What is a keyword synonym?
Keyword synonyms are simply variations of your keyword. For example, if you are targeting the keyword “handheld electronics”, you may want to use “portable electronics” or “handheld electronic devices”.
A common practice is to use your keyword a majority of the time, but them to add in a synonym here and there. Some people even use them in the title when submitting to bookmarking sites, though I really don’t know if that is an effective practice or not.
One other great thing about keyword synonyms is that they often come about in the writing of a blog post naturally anyway, so using these words in combination with your main keyword can be easy and effective.
Good luck!
