As a mom of an 11-year-old girl, I was shocked and dismayed to recently discover the dangers that social media poses to our children. I had no idea that there are predators out there posing as children in order to lure them into harmful and dangerous situations.
I decided to do a little experiment. I set up a fake account on a popular social media site posing as an 11-year-old girl. Within minutes, I was bombarded with messages from older men asking me for sexually explicit photos and videos. It was sickening.
I want to warn other parents about the dangers of social media and what our children are exposed to when we allow them to use it. We need to be more vigilant about monitoring our children’s online activity and teach them how to protect themselves from predators.
Social media is a dangerous place for our children. They are exposed to all sorts of harmful content, including violence, bullying, and sexual predators. As parents, we need to be more aware of what our children are doing online and take steps to protect them.
