More people are considering getting into freelancing as it looks as if you can make lots more money as compared to working for someone else. Also, there is the much touted advantage of being your own boss and working at your chosen hours. But seriously, what does it take for freelance success?
There are a fortunate few who get into freelancing and make a success of it. There are many others who struggle if they cannot find projects. So, whatever you do, if you have a paid job, do not quit until you establish your freelance success.
The fact is freelancing is lucrative but only if you can continually get clients and projects. The other part of the equation is that you have the unique skills that people will pay for. Just because you have a skill, does not mean that you will get projects.
You have the opportunity to develop your unique skills on your job if that is what you want to specialize on. If that is not the case, then put in some hours to develop the new skills that you want to pick up. You will be amazed by the extent of free stuff on the internet. But be prepared to spend some money towards your self development.
Aside from the skills, will you be able to work without supervision? Can you prepare a plan and carry it out completing it on time and within your budgeted time and cost?
If you are not sure, then start freelancing without quitting your job. Research on the internet and find opportunities. There might be forums where people with similar skills discuss matters related to what you are looking for. The internet is a helpful place to raise your questions. There typically will be experienced people who will respond to your questions.
Look for the freelance opportunities and apply for those that sound good to you. For starters, do not expect to get paid a lot. Getting the experience and building a client base is much more important at this time.
This will give you the relevant experience of completing projects on time and to improve at time management. Also gives you the opportunity to decide whether this style of life suits you. Not every one is cut out for this and it is fine to decide not to pursue freelancing.
On the other hand, as you get more projects and clients, you can see your income increasing and you can hit a point of freelance success at which point you may decide to quit your job.
