One of the easiest link building strategies is to create backlinks with the broken link building technique.
In this video, Tim Soulo takes you through a step-by-step process to get backlinks from high quality websites (ex. Copy Blogger).
The process is quite simple:
First, you can search for a domain in Ahrefs’ Site Explorer. (
From here, you can navigate to the broken links report which will find all websites that returned a ‘404 not found error.’
Yes, the page is dead!
You can then filter down the report to only show DoFollow links. This will likely bring up websites that used to be quality pieces of content from a blog that are wasting link juice.
Make sure that the page is indeed broken and then use archive.org to see what the page looked like prior to it being a dead link.
You can now create a page or blog post on a similar topic and begin your outreach process to create backlinks for your website.
The real SEO trick isn’t to get a backlink to your site from one link prospect.
The magic happens when you find ALL backlinks pointing to the dead page.
In the video example, the target URL had numerous referring domains pointing to it, which could result in a ton of links to your site.
No matter what industry you’re in, there will be websites that have broken links. Use this beginner link building tactic to find high quality backlinks, with the help of Ahrefs’ backlink checker tool (Site Explorer).
