If you’re like most people, you probably use email every day. In fact, you probably can’t imagine going a day without checking your email. Email has become such an integral part of our lives that it’s hard to imagine life without it.

However, as important as email is, there are still some people who make serious mistakes when it comes to email marketing. If you’re not careful, these mistakes can cost you dearly in terms of both money and time.

So, what are some of the most common email marketing mistakes? Read on to find out.

1. Not Having a Targetted List

One of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to email marketing is not having a targetted list. A targetted list is a list of email addresses that are all targeted towards a specific niche or market.

For example, if you’re a real estate agent, then your targetted list would be a list of people who are interested in buying or selling property. Alternatively, if you’re a fishing tackle retailer, then your targetted list would be a list of people who love to fish.

The bottom line is that if you don’t have a targetted list, then your emails are likely to go straight to the junk folder. So, make sure you take the time to build up a targetted list before you start sending out any emails.

2. Not Personalising Your Emails

Another mistake people make is not personalising their emails. When you send out an email, it should always be addressed to the person receiving it. It should never say “Dear sir/madam” or “To whom it may concern”. This just makes it look like you’re mass-emailing everyone on your list and not taking the time to personalise each email.

Instead, take the time to address each person by their name and perhaps even include a personal message in each email too. This will show that you care about your recipients and that you’re taking the time to communicate with them on a one-to-one basis. Personalised emails are far more likely to be read and acted upon than generic ones.

3. Sending Too Many Emails

Continuing on from the last point, another mistake people make is sending too many emails too often. If you bombard your recipients with too many emails, they’re quickly going to get annoyed and either unsubscribe from your list or mark your emails as spam. Either way, it’s not good for business.
