Anjaan is a 2014 Tamil action thriller film directed by N. Lingusamy, written by Brinda Sarathy and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah, founder of Lyca Productions.[1][2] The film features Suriya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead roles with Vidyut Jammwal in a pivotal role as an antagonist.[3][4] The soundtrack album and background score were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, while cinematography and editing were handled by Santosh Sivan and Anthony respectively. Principal photography commenced on 24 February 2014[5] in Mumbai and the film released worldwide on 15 August 2014.[6][7] Upon release, Anjaan became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2014.[8][9]
The film opens in Chennai with two friends, Sooraj (Suriya) and Kandhasamy (Vidyut Jammwal), being chased by gangsters. In the ensuing fight, Sooraj manages to escape while Kandhasamy is caught and brutally tortured before being killed. Kandhasamy’s death enrages Sooraj, who vows revenge against those responsible. He sets out to find them but ends up getting framed for murder and sent to prison.
In prison, Sooraj befriends a local thug named Rasool (Santhanam) who helps him get acquainted with the other inmates. With Rasool’s help, Sooraj starts to climb up the prison’s hierarchy. He also meets an underworld don named Vishwa (Sudeep), who mentors him and introduces him to various other mafia bosses including Raj Bhai (Boman Irani) and Siddharth Abhimanyu (Manoj Bajpayee). Through these contacts, Sooraj starts gathering information about Kandhasamy’s killers.
After being released from prison, Sooraj sets out to track down Kandhasamy’s killers one by one. He first kills Javed Siddiqui (Sharat Saxena), the man who ordered Kandhasamy’s torture, before moving on to eliminate Sampath (Ravi Maria), one of the men who carried out the torture. He then sets his sights on Rauf Lala (Rahul Dev), another henchman involved in Kandhasamy’s death. However, Lala manages to escape and goes into hiding.
With Lala out of reach, Sooraj turns his attention to Raj Bhai, Siddharth Abhimanyu and Vishwa – the three men he believes are ultimately responsible for Kandhasamy’s death. While trying to kill Raj Bhai, Sooraj is betrayed by Rasool and is arrested by the police. In jail, he is visited by Samarjit Singhania (SACHIN Khedekar), a senior police officer who offers him a deal – if he helps Samarjit take down Raj Bhai, Vishwa and Siddharth Abhimanyu, Samarjit will ensure that he is not charged for any of his previous murders. Sooraj agrees to Samarjit’s offer and is released from jail.
He then proceeds to eliminate Raj Bhai and Vishwa before finally going after Siddharth Abhimanyu – the man he believes killed Kandhasamy. After a protracted battle, Sooraj finally kills Siddharth Abhimanyu but not before sustaining serious injuries himself. With his vengeance finally complete, Sooraj collapses from his injuries and is rushed to hospital where he later dies surrounded by his friends and family.
