I am not one to purchase an item without thoroughly reviewing my options. This SSD was not exception. I extensively reviewed other products in this category, went through a painstaking trek of brushing up on my modern storage tech, and finally came to my conclusion on what product I needed to buy. I was in the market for fast and high capacity EXTERNAL storage. I own a 2019 MacBook Pro with 256GB of storage.
Firstly, I reviewed SATA-based SSDs, which are fast, but not the fastest. I initially was going to go with the ever-popular Samsung T5 SSD drive in this category. After doing a little more digging, I learned of the newer and faster NVME drives on the market. At this point, I found out that you can take an NVME drive meant for insertion directly into PC and place it into an enclosure to create an external drive. Although not nearly as fast as direct insertion into a computer, these external drives can reach upwards of 1000 Mbps theoretically, whereas SATA-based external hard drives linger around the 500 Mbps theoretically. In a perfect world, Thunderbolt 3 enclosures would be the standard with their insane speeds that my MacBook can harness, but it is not feasible right now unless you have deep pockets. I accepted that, for the price point, I would need to go with NVME or SATA.
After checking out more on Amazon, I realized that both NVME and SATA drives were very similarly priced, so I decided for NVME. Why would I go with a slower drive for the same price, right? After seeing glowing reviews and great price point, I then decided to go with the Sabrent Rocket 1TB NVME SSD drive and their external enclosure. However, I really wished that the enclosures for NVME drives were a little smaller. I then took a trek to find smaller enclosures, and this led me to look at other Sabrent products. That is how I stumbled across this product. They had just been uploaded to their store, and I had not seen anything like it in all of my product research.
Once I saw on my computer screen how small this drive was, I didn’t believe it. It is smaller than any other SATA or NVME based drives I have personally seen. After seeing it in person, I am even more impressed. Portability is very important to me, as I will need this on a daily basis due to Apple’s horrific and pricy native storage options. It was very close to the price of the Sabrent Rocket + Enclosure but in a MUCH smaller package. This thing is more like a bigger flash drive rather than a small SSD. That’s how compact it is.
It is fast. On my 2019 MacBook Pro, I am consistently getting around 600+ Mbps on average tasks, which is fantastic in the real world when it comes to external drives. Also, my MacBook recognizes the drive almost instantly upon insertion. Pro tip: Plug this product or any other SSD directly into your USB-C port on your computer to get the full speed benefits. With MacBooks, a hub is almost mandatory now, and plugging this into those hubs will limit your transfer speeds substantially.
My one gripe is that I was not able to find much detailed information on this drive regarding its internals and potential lifespan, but I decided to take the leap anyway given the reception of Sabrent’s other products. So far, I’m very glad I did!
All in all, I got a much smaller and faster drive for the same price point as other leading competitors, and that is a win in my book.
