Contrary to an other review, the one I received has better performance.
This evaluation was made with MacBook Pro M2 max 2023 running Ventura 13.6
The unit did report as a USB 3 hub, but when you look in the system report it’s recognized as a USB 3.0 AND a USB 2.0 hub both form VIA Labs INC. This particular unit is version 90.13
I used a SanDisk Extreme Pro 1 TB to do the disk speed test.
When connected to the USB A port it achieved a top speed of 415 MB/s (3.32 Gbps)
The same drive connected to the hub’s USB C port achieved a top speed of 913 MB/s (7.3 Gbps) which is close to max speed for this drive.
For a base line comparison I did the same test with the drive connected straight to the laptop and achieved similar USB C data rates.
The ethernet port has a true 1 Gbps data rate.
Good News!!! The AMS-5in1e will fit on a laptop protected by a Satechi Eco-Hardshell Case when the lid is OPEN. The lid cover does interfere with the thicker RJ45 portion of the hub when closed and pries the hub downwards.
If the hub was slightly more tapered on the laptop side the lid cover would not be an issue.
all in all it ads ethernet and USB A connectivity to your MacBook at a good price in a neat and really small form factor.
