This USB-A Format Drive Handles Large Backups Fast

This review is for the ORICO USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard (USSD) Flash Drive, advertised to have read and write speed up to 520MB/s.
As anyone who has been looking can tell you, the specs for USB 3.x connectors (and therefore drives with these connectors) can be really confusing. The packaging for this drive is labelled as a 256GB USB 3.1 Gen 2 version of a USB Solid State Flash Drive (USSD) and claims 520MB/S speed. I tested the drive in the USB 3.1 port of my (circa 2017) Dell XPS 8930 Desktop by copying 42.7GB of backup files from the internal hard drive to the Orico Flash Drive. This task was completed in 2.5 minutes (= 150 seconds), which equates to an average write speed of ~285MB/sec. The fastest USB 3.0 Flash Drives I’ve tested in the last 6 months have reached peak write speeds of just 36MB/sec, so this is a noticeable improvement. Windows 10 Task Manager showed peak write speed during this task of 365MB/sec (see photo), but this was not a constant rate; the speed throttling is likely due to the read-speed being limited by the source hard drive.
Like most fast flash drive, Orico’s drive heats up under continuous use; their temperature graph (see photo) shows a temperature of about 35C / 95F after 2.5 minutes of operation. They claim that this is significantly cooler than comparable USSD drives which is certainly possible. Using a Thermal Camera, I checked my Orico drive during the 42.7GB transfer. I found the drive to heat up to about 97F at the USB connection point while the opposite end warmed to about 82F – Noticeable heating but not too-hot-to-touch by any means and consistent with their graph.
CONCLUSION: This Orico drive’s performance is reasonably close to what is claimed. Even in an older desktop machine, this USB-A format Flash Drive was fast, making it a plausible choice for those who need to store larger size file backups. At its current price point, you are paying a premium for this speed and so it will not be for everyone.

Very heavy solid feeling Stick; quick on iPad

Lately I use mostly iPads and occasionally an Android device over PCs. Tested on iPad Mini (no M1 Chip) and it got immediately recognized and transferred pictures immediately. I don’t have write/read tests, so cannot test with lab quality but it worked for me. Transferred data and pictures between iPad, stick, and Android without problems.
The actual stick is on the (very) heavy side, and feels very solid. All aluminum casinig including the cap that sits firmly on the stick. Casing shows the brand name and SSD drive but misses the data capacity, which would habe e been nice. The instructions are in Chinese?, and English with little info also in German, French, Spanish, and Italian. To get info on “Customer Support” (a Support email), you would have to actually look there, no info given under the English version.
One thing that concerns me a little is the picture about heating (which I have not yet encountered). If it means the stick can get 54 C that is 129F, that would be a bit hot. – I am a little hesitant to use the stick for long term storage, even as it is an SSD drive, simply because it’s a stick and not an external drive but transfers and for short term use it appears to be a solid choice.
For now giving it a 4/5. — (*MY RATE SCALE*: 5=perfect; 4=minor imperfections; 3=likely wouldn’t buy again; 2= too many problems; 1= shouldn’t be sold or dangerous).
