SL R231, SL350
The SL R231 was launched in 2012. Mercedes engineers claimed that this was the most demanding development that an SL had ever undertaken. It was not only the new aluminum space frame, but also the vario roof with a panoramic sunroof and variable tint that was next to the upgraded engines new.
SL R231, SL400
A multitude of new safety features were either standard equipment or available as an option. Some of the standard options included collision prevention, attention assistance, crash responsive head restraints, active hood and pre-safe brakes, just to name a few
SL R231, SL550
Next to the 3.5 L V6 engine (M276 DE35), also a 4.7 L V8 biturbo engine (M278 DE46 AL) was available as SL500/SL550. While the V6 developed initially 306 hp and a max torque of 370 Nm (273 lbs-ft) at 3,500 rpm, the V8 offered 435 hp and a max torque of 700 Nm (516 lbs-ft) already at a low 1,800 rpm
SL R231, SL63 AMG
Naturally, also AMG contributed to the R231 line-up with a 5.5 L V8 bi-turbo engine (M157 DE55 AL) in form of the SL63 AMG. The top-of-the-line offer had to be the SL65 AMG with its marvelous 6.0 L V12 bi-turbo engine (M279 E60 AL)
