I’m using this with a newer iMac, mainly as a way to extend the display after the Apple USB-C-to-MiniDP (AKA Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2) adapter turned out not to support displays at all. It works great for that, but also gives me the additional USB ports for other accessories since the iMac has a grand total of 2 USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports.
The only downside to this is that the amount of power provided to this is limited – since I’m using it on an iMac, I’m not using the built-in charging capability, and the items that are plugged in can only pull so much power from the iMac. I ended up using another powered USB hub for the items that need more than this can provide.
