Character Development — Animating the Inanaimate
Almost anything can be brought to life in the hands of the illustrator. If the artist believes in a talking slice of toast, it is likely that the child will too. This kind of irrational conviction is an important ingredient in the process of injecting life into the most unlikely of inanimate objects.
In this image from Squids Will Be Squids, Lane Smith cleverly combines matchbox and matches as torso, limbs and head to give them life. Straw has been given singed limbs.
The Picture Book — Form
Form follows function. You have your sketchbooks, notebooks, your favored medium, and a story to tell. Do the methods you have developed sit comfortably with the idea you have for the book, or the text you are to illustrate?
As shown in this sketch by Leonie Shearing, humor is often best conveyed through a relaxed line and a linear style.
Book Covers
Most children’s story books have illustrated covers. A pictorial cover design needs to promote the book and demand attention, while at the same time being true to the spirit of the content.
In the case of How to Raise and Keep a Dragon, the concept was to create a book that looked like a genuine old handcrafted notebook containing advice on keeping dragons.
