It’s made out of solid brass and quite heavy for what it is, but that’s kind of the point. Straight out of the packaging it’s shinny and kind of hard to read but after it develops a bit of a patina it becomes easier to read. The edges are cut straight and work quite well for small layout tasks, the scales are accurate enough for small measurements. Overall it’s a pretty handy tool to have around and it’s small enough to fit in your pocket.

I love the material: brass. The weight is great as well, as it stops unwanted movement when drafting. My only criticism is that it can be a bit hard to read at some times due to the very small ticks on the outer edge. If bad eyesight is a trait of yours, do not buy this. Some have complained about the tarnish buildup on the brass from your hands… This is not an issue for me. If you want it to be shiny again, take some brasso to it and itll be good as new.

I have run out of patience for all the broken plastic versions of this that I have tried to fix or had to replace. I finally reached the end of my rope and I bought this one. My kids stick this instrument in their pencil case that conveniently ends up at the bottom of a schoolbag and crushed. Now, with this version, you could drive over it with a car and you would be fine. It is beyond robust. The readings are etched into the brass, so they do not fade over time like the plastic ones that are printed. I think this could be passed down generations. If you are like me and fed up with those junk box plastic ones, splurge for this one and never look back.
