What’s new in this edition of Data Engineering with AWS?

There’s a lot that’s new!

Every chapter has been updated to reflect the latest services and features from AWS, as well as to cover important new trends in the industry. In addition to the updates to existing chapters, we’ve also added brand-new chapters that further modernize the book. Finally, this edition has also been revised to cover new services such as Amazon DataZone, as well as new features for existing services, such as the option for Amazon EMR Serverless.

With all that in mind, I truly think this new edition represents one of the strongest resources available right now for anyone looking to start a career in data engineering, or for any established data engineers who want to get up to date with everything new that AWS has to offer.

Are there any specific sections you’re looking forward to sharing with readers?

I’m super excited about the 3 brand new chapters in this edition that cover extremely important and current topics - open table formats (which are used to create transactional data lakes), data mesh (a new approach to organizing analytical data), and DataOps (an approach to building and managing analytical data platforms).

Open table formats are really interesting because they give you the ability to build data lakes that have properties that only used to be possible with traditional database architectures. The data mesh approach is something we should all consider as it helps in creating datasets that data consumers can more easily find, understand, and use. And DataOps is an emerging new paradigm in the data space that’s already transforming how data products are built.

Gareth - 4Gareth - 4 How does this book differ from other Data Engineering books out there?

This book is somewhat unique in that it focuses on the AWS tools that are used to build data engineering pipelines, with hands-on activities in every chapter. But beyond just being a guide to AWS big-data related tools, it also provides foundational knowledge of core data engineering concepts.

How has AWS and the Data Engineering landscape changed since the last edition was released?

Some of the big new approaches that have become popular since the first edition of this book include how to organize and split the responsibilities for analytic data (with a data mesh approach), how data lakes are now able to provide functionality that was traditionally only available in data warehouses (by using open table formats), and how the DevOps approach to software engineering is now being applied to data engineering (with DataOps). And all of these are covered in the book.

Teaches you all the foundational skills needed to become a data engineer. Looks exclusively at the AWS toolset to keep your learning focused. Explores new paradigms in data engineering like the data mesh and DataOps approaches.
